Farms keep diesel and oils on hand for long stretches, often in outdoor tanks that go through wide temperature swings. That is exactly the setting where water and sediment build up in stored fuel and cause problems at the worst time of year.
Where the contamination comes from
Temperature changes cause condensation inside fuel tanks. Water that settles at the bottom encourages microbial growth, which produces sludge and clogs filters. Dust and debris get in during refilling. Equipment servicing also generates used oil that needs somewhere to go.
How centrifugal separation helps
Circulating stored fuel through a centrifuge, often called fuel polishing, removes water and sediment before they reach equipment. Used oil drained from machinery can be cleaned and used in a waste oil heater to warm a shop or barn.
Typical uses
- Polishing diesel in on-farm storage tanks
- Removing water and sludge from tank bottoms
- Cleaning used oil from tractor and equipment servicing
- Preparing waste oil for use in waste oil heaters
