Electrical Wiring for Centrifuge

Electrical Wiring for Centrifuge

Electrical Requirements

Specification Requirement
Preferred voltage 240V (all motors start more reliably on 240V)
3/4 HP motor Usually factory-wired 120V
1 HP and 1.5 HP motors Factory-wired 240V
Rewiring Possible — follow motor nameplate wiring diagram
Wire gauge 12 AWG minimum for all installations

DO NOT USE EXTENSION CORDS. High starting current overheats the starting capacitor through an extension cord, destroying the motor. Not covered under warranty.

Motor Current Reference

HP No-Load Current Full-Load Current Locked Rotor Current
3/4 7.3 / 3.7 A (120/240V) 11 / 5.5 A (120/240V) 55 / 32 A (120/240V)
1 9.1 / 4.5 A (120/240V) 13.6 / 6.8 A (120/240V) 75 / 43 A (120/240V)
1.5 10.1 / 5.1 A (120/240V) 15.2 / 7.6 A (120/240V) 120 / 65 A (120/240V)

Circuit Protection Guidelines

  • Size circuit breaker at full-load amps × 1.25 (NEC requirement)
  • Use a dedicated circuit — do not share with other high-draw equipment
  • Ground the centrifuge frame per local electrical code
  • For flammable vapor environments: EXP PROOF Class I Group D / Class II Group F&G motors required
