Centrifuging Low Flashpoint Liquids

Centrifuging Low Flashpoint Liquids

Flash Point Reference

Liquid Flash Point Risk Level
Diesel fuel 100–175°F Moderate — standard precautions
Kerosene 100–150°F Moderate — standard precautions
Naphtha ~100°F Elevated — extra ventilation required
Gasoline -45°F EXTREME — inert gas purge mandatory
Methanol 52°F HIGH — explosion-proof equipment required

Gasoline vapors are heavier than air and accumulate at floor level. Explosive range: 1.2%–7.1% concentration. A single spark is sufficient for ignition.

Required Safety Measures

Requirement Details
Ventilation Mechanically ventilated area with fresh air makeup
Inert gas purge Purge centrifuge, piping, and tanks with nitrogen before startup
Continuous inert gas Maintain nitrogen flow during operation to prevent air ingestion
Chill output lines Chill lines to condense vapors before they reach the tank
Grounding Bond and ground all equipment and tanks to prevent static sparks
External venting Tank vents must exhaust outside at a safe discharge point
Motor type Three-phase motors only — single-phase motors have sparking starter contacts
Open-frame motors Prohibited in work area — use enclosed or explosion-proof motors
Post-shutdown purge Do not open centrifuge until all flammable vapors are fully purged
